These are chocolate with raspberry buttercream cuppies that I made for my very good friends Jason and Keren’s wedding last weekend. They have a little problem with loving wrestling. Well, they don’t think it’s a problem, but I know better. I found all these beaten up wrestling figures for really cheap and placed them around the cake, which served two purposes; to keep an eye and make sure no one took cupcakes before it was time and also to be flower girls. On top is The Invisible Girl and the stretchy guy. I know the stretchy guy is not Plastic Man because I got chastised for saying it was. I won’t make the same mistake twice.
Mazel tov Jason and Keren!

Is it bad that I can identify all of those wrestlers?
Comment by Ryan — January 22, 2007 @ 11:23 am |
those wrestlers are pretty hot. i like nursemyra’s idea! and ryan, i think it is scary that you can identify all of the wrestlers! lol.
isa, you always make me laugh. who knew cupcakes could be so funny! i guess that is how they are taking over the world though. well that, and how yummy they are.

Isa,
I was wondering about where you get the tiers for the cupcakes? My sister is getting married in June and I am signed up to bake the vegan cupcakes (which should be a cinch- thanks to you!). Any strategy suggestions for baking and assembling a swanky wedding display? We’re talking about 150-200 cupcakes.
Thanks!
Dee

Dee, my husband made the tiers. It is really simple. Do you have a standing saw laying around?
Comment by isachandra — January 23, 2007 @ 1:55 pm |
This is too fantastic.

Isa,
I don’t know what a “standing saw” is… I have a garage and a husband, though. I will talk to him about it. How many cupcakes fit on the tiers he made? Do you use it each time you do a wedding? Is it colapasable? (Can I spell?) Do you repaint it? How do you store it? What is the largest wedding you’ve ever baked for, and what should I be prepared to deal with?
Thank you for all of the inspiration and advice!
~Dee

Those wrestlers are just too damn fantastic. The flowers. The raspberry buttercream. Perfect!
Comment by bazu — January 23, 2007 @ 6:03 pm |
Deidre, I was kidding about the standing saw. I am sure you don’t have one! But still, if you can cut wood into a circle, maybe using a jigsaw, then you can do it. We do use it for all weddings and yes, I repaint it depending on the theme. It isn’t exactly collapsable but the tiers screw in and it is easy enough to assemble and disassemble quickly. It holds around 200 cupcakes but you can of course place more cupcakes around it. Maybe I will put up a little picture tutorial if I get around to it!

Isa,
Thanks for all of the notes! I think we would all love to see a picture-tutorial of the setup. 🙂 I have talked to my husband and he’s totally game for helping me build a tiered system, and 200 is the number I need. I was thinking of going over to the restaurant supply place to see if I can get a plastic tiered set-up. I wonder if anything like this exists ready-made, in case my hubby isn’t as woodsy as yours.
Thank you a bunch!
Dee

These are reallllly cute…I’m thinking abotu making them for Valentine’s Day.
Speaking of which, do you have any special V-Day tricks up your sleeve? I am organizing an event on V-Day specifically about microbicides and how they will lead to more female empowerment. In the past, we’ve made vagina cookies, but I’m sure you have a cupcake that’s equally as clever 🙂

Wauw! You made one vegan chef very happy – just looking at them!!
Comment by Dree — January 24, 2007 @ 11:34 pm |
This is mouth-wateringly gorgeous, Isa. I do have a question, though: how do you transport so many cupcakes? I find that now that the word is out about the fabulous cuppies I’ve been baking (thanks to you), I’m toting them everywhere, and I don’t have a good system for carrying more than a dozen at a time.
Thanks! (And congratulations on the NYT article!)
Comment by Sylvan — January 26, 2007 @ 1:52 pm |
Hey Sylvan,
I have a Cupcake Courier (http://www.cupcakecourier.com/) which will carry 36 cupcakes at a time, which is awesome. But I too wonder how she transports 200+.
Tell all Isa!
Dee
Ps. way to go with the NYT and that VwaV is rated 67 on Amazon right now- way to go!
Comment by Deirdre Jean — January 26, 2007 @ 2:08 pm |
Dee – Does the courier have plenty of headspace for tall cupcakes, like the tiramisu from VCToTW? It’s an awesome looking container–I may have to order one. Thanks for the idea!
Comment by Sylvan — January 26, 2007 @ 5:46 pm |
Sylvan,
I don’t transport them frosted, I frost them when I get there! Sneaky.
Comment by isachandra — January 29, 2007 @ 1:30 pm |
Aha! That explains it. And a great idea, you cupcake ninja you.
Comment by Sylvan — January 29, 2007 @ 6:34 pm |
Hey Sylvan,
Your question about the cupcake courier- it totally has enough headroom for the tall cupcakes. You know, for those times when you simply cannot frost when you get there.

isa, thanks so much for this really fun idea for a wedding cake. my best bud is baking mine and i just started to research recipes. i’m sure she’ll love this idea(and be a little relieved too) since she makes rockin’ cupcakes already. i’ll definitely be buying the cookbook for us to peruse for the perfect recipe. we’ll probably do two different kinds since we planned on doing a grooms cake too. i love the choc/rasp combination. what do you suggest we pair that with? we’re considering a white/yellow cupcake with almonds or citrus fruit. it will be mid june so we want these to be on the lighter side. yay, i cannot wait!
thanks a ton,
heather, chicago

Citrus is a great idea. I like to keep the flavors simple, so I would do just a straight up lemon cupcake with lemon frosting. Or to a mixed citrus one with orange, lemon and line zest and juice.

Hi Isa!
Thank you for inspiring me and helping me so much with the 200 cupcakes for my little sister’s wedding last weekend! Check out my photo stream~ I wasn’t able to talk my hubby into helping me build the towers so I found some plastic ones online. We did however, use your brilliant strategy of transporting the cupcakes naked and frosting them at the reception site. I made chocolate mint from VCTOTW with minty vegan buttercream, and the Lemon Gems from VWAV with lemony vegan buttercream. They all looked perfect and tasted perfect too!
Can’t wait for the Veganomicon!
xoxo,
Dee

WOW! These cupcakes look very yummy indeed. We were eating these when we recently travelled to America, in our limo! When you arrive in Los Angeles Airport, LAX, be sure to call upon a great Orange County Limousine Rental provider so that you can meet and greet your new fans in America in style. Hummers and SUV type Orange County Limousines are the best and the most popular.

One of the best websites we have seen for stunning dresses ( and for 2010 at much more affordable prices than her previous collections) is the Vera Wang site.
